• "I have had many good Chiantis and Vino da Tavolas from the 1991 vintage, making me wonder why this vintage has not received better press. While it is not nearly as profound as the 1990 vintage, and there is a problem with inconsistency, there are quantities of good wine available. The impressive 1991 Coniale (100% Cabernet Sauvignon aged in small oak casks for 12-14 months) offers an intense dark ruby color, a closed but spicy, leathery, vanillin, and smoky-scented nose, dense, rich, muscular, concentrated flavors with considerable extraction, and a medium to full-bodied, spicy finish. The wine needs 1-3 years of cellaring to shed its tannin, after which it will keep for 10-15 years." (Robert Parker)

It is deceptively rounder and softer than the Sammarco in its expression of cassis, minerals, licorice and sweet, dark fruit. Despite the lushness of its fruit there is plenty of structure lurking underneath, and it will require significant patience before offering its finest drinking. High-density vineyards, biodynamic farming and low yields are the hallmarks of the wines of Castello dei Rampolla, located in the prestigious Conca d’Oro in Panzano. Despite its elegant name Castello di Rampolla is a small, family-run property with a decidedly artisanal approach to working in both the vineyards and the cellar. • The 2004 Sammarco is a blend of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Merlot and 5% Sangiovese. It exhibits a dark purplish color, along with a wonderfully fragrant nose of spices and violets. It is a rich, powerful effort packed with an array of blueberries, blackberries and grilled herbs, showing a layered personality and an imposing tannic structure that will require patience. This gorgeously pure wine should drink effortlessly to age 25. A recent bottle of the 1988 was still youthful and full of life. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2029. • Castello dei Rampolla’s 2003 D’Alceo (85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Petit Verdot) is another ripe, powerful wine packed with layers of super-ripe, opulent fruit, graphite, licorice and tar supported by a firm, classic structure that will require time to fully come together. It is sweeter and riper than the Sammarco, and its more supple personality works well to balance the wine’s structural components. "The estate’s 2002s show why Tenuta dell’Ornellaia is one of Italy’s premier properties. Those obsessed with points will chase the higher rated 2003s and 2004s, but consumers who buy wines to drink them would do well to consider these 2002s especially given that pricing should be favorable. The 2002s are by no means the equal of the estate’s top wines but they will offer useful drinking while the more important vintages reach maturity. The 2002 Ornellaia (65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot) is an astoundingly good wine considering the vintage. The 2003 Valpolicella Superiore comes across as shockingly primary for a five-year old wine. Masses of jammy dark fruit flow onto the palate in a concentrated, generous style. The firm tannins are those of the torrid 2003 vintage, yet this broad-shouldered, expansive wine has more than enough fruit to provide balance. Notes of chocolate, leather, coffee and sweet spices gradually emerge with air, yet this remains a backward, unyielding wine at the moment.
