The Hermitage boasts a rich, dense past. The Romans already knew of and enjoyed the ¿Vienna Wines¿ that were then named ¿wines of the Saint-Christophe hillside¿ due to a chapel located there dedicated to the saint. It was in the 17th century that the name Hermitage appeared, in memory of a knight returning from the Crusades who is said to have lived as a hermit on this hill owned by Anne of Castille, Queen of Spain. He is said to have replanted a vineyard here, which has since been known as the "Hermitage". The Hermitage is one of the world's greatest reds. Once upon a time, due to its colour and robust nature, it was often added to weaker Bordeaux, including the Château Lafite Rothschild, but today it enjoys incomparable celebrity in its own right. Boileau, Louis XIII, Nicolas II and Alexandre Dumas are just a few of the countless fans of this highly appreciated wine. The Hermitage red is a powerful, aromatic, refined and complex wine that requires a few years of storage before reaching full expression. Those from the Maison Tardieu-Laurent are made from very old vines (50 years and over) aged in new barrels and are neither fined nor filtered. Established in Lourmarin in the Luberon region, the Maison Tardieu-Laurent took shape following an encounter between the Burgundy wine merchant Dominique Laurent and the consultant oenologist Michel Tardieu. Today, Michel Tardieu is responsible for sales and oversees other properties in his capacity as consultant.*The above information describes the wine and is not vintage specific.

The "bio" designation covers certified wines produced by biodynamic or organic methods, sustainably produced wines, and "environmentally friendly" wines that are not officially certified. See the blog article for more information.
The "biodynamic" designation covers all estates certified for using biodynamic methods or in the process of converting to biodynamics. They are accredited by one of the two official bodies, Demeter or Biodyvin. All wines produced by biodynamic methods are also certified as organic.
The "organic" designation covers all estates certified for using organic methods or in the process of converting to organic agriculture. They are accredited by one of the bodies approved by the Ministry of Agriculture, such as Ecocert.
The "sustainable" designation covers all estates certified for using sustainable or High Environmental Value (level 3 Environmental Certification) techniques.
The "environmentally friendly" designation refers to estates practising environmentally friendly wine-growing techniques, but that have not opted for certification. These estates may have adopted biodynamic principles (non-certified) or simply no longer use chemical products.
All designations apply to recent vintages.
