The wine

A Bas Armagnac from Domaine de Charron distilled in 1996 and bottled at cask strength in 2016 after 20 years’’ ageing in 420-litre oak casks built by a local cooper. It is made with the Baco grape variety, which was developed after the phylloxera crisis and is a hybrid of Folle Blanche—formerly the leading grape variety for cognac and Armagnac production—and Noah. The grape is named after its inventor, a teacher from the Landes region of France. The combination of Baco and Bas Armagnac’’s signature tawny sands is a match made in heaven.

The distillery Domaine de Charron

Domaine de Charron was founded in the early 20th century by the Lartigue family in Perquie, in the Landes region of France. At the time, it made a little wine depending on the year, which was entrusted to a local cooperative for the production of the house’s Armagnac. It was in 1985 that Jacques and his brother Claude bought two hectares of vine planted with Baco from their father Fernand, who was planning on uprooting the vines, resulting in the estate we know today. The brothers entrusted the work to a neighbouring wine-grower, who quickly helped produce a high-quality wine, ideal for distilling and creating their Armagnac. Domaine de Charron releases vintage and cask strength Armagnacs, all produced with the Baco grape variety.
