Frances Clotworthy bought and renovated the 16th century buildings of the Drumchork Lodge Hotel, Scotland in 1997. The distillery, which is located in a garage next to the hotel, is famous for having the smallest stills in the country, with a capacity of just 120 litres, inspired by those of the illicit distillers operating in the region before the implementation of the Excise Act in 1823. In 2003, Clotworthy was able to obtain a licence thanks to a loophole in the law (corrected immediately after) despite the small size of her stills, which are under the legal minimum of 1,800 litres. The first distillation was completed in 2006, with the help of Frances’ husband John Clotworthy. Drumchork Lodge Hotel and Loch Ewe were put for sale in 2015.
