Die großen Akteure auf dem Markt der Single Malts beachteten Port Ellen bis ins 21. Jahrhundert nur wenig. Die wachsende Begeisterung für getorften Malt rettete ihn schließlich. Wie viele andere Brennereien fiel auch Port Ellen der Rezession in den 80er Jahren zum Opfer. Im Mai 1983 schloss die Brennerei und wurde nicht wieder geöffnet. Fünfzehn Jahre nach der Schließung, 1998, brachten die Besitzer zwei limitierte Abfüllungen auf den Markt. Eine zu Ehren des 25-jährigen Bestehens der gleichnamigen Mälzerei und die andere für The Rare Malts Selection. Aber erst im neuen Jahrtausend wurde Port Ellen regelmäßig abgefüllt, mit Schwerpunkt auf den Produktionsjahren 1978 und 1979, in sehr guter Qualität. Seltsamerweise sind die jüngsten Versionen am Schwierigsten zu finden, darunter der 10 und 13 Jahre alte Signatory Vintage Black Ceramic. Die meisten wurden mit 40 % oder 43 % abgefüllt, man kann aber immer noch das Profil des Destillats herausschmecken, ohne dass die Holznoten zu stark sind. Der älteste Jahrgang, den wenige Sammler noch besitzen, ist ein 12-jähriger Port Ellen, der 1967 oder 1968 destilliert wurde (die Brennerei war zwischen 1929 und 1967 geschlossen). Er wurde anlässlich des Besuchs Ihrer Majestät der Königin in der Destillerie am 9. August 1980 abgefüllt.
