Fondata nel 1798, l'unica distilleria dell'Isola di Mull ha portato il nome di Ledaig dal 1972 al 1975, prima di essere ribattezzata Tobermory. Da questa doppia identità, ormai consolidata, sono nati due single malt, caratterizzati da due profili completamente diversi. Se questa differenza può essere a volte attribuita alla distillazione, in questo caso si tratta principalmente dell'uso della torba nella fase della maltazione. Così, il malt whisky Tobermory a volte diventa Ledaig (una sorta di Mr Hyde) per il suo lato tenebroso e molto torbato, a volte Tobermory, (Doctor Jekyll) per il suo profilo più classico, senza ruvidità e senza note torbate. A questo si aggiunge un affinamento che va da un estremo (botti di primo passaggio di Oloroso) all’altro (botti usate di Bourbon), e che permette di comprendere cosa può proporre questa distilleria dalle mille sfaccettature. Sia che si preferisca lo stile Ledaig o Tobermory, una cosa è certa, l'annata 1972 invecchiata in botti di sherry di primo passaggio è un’etichetta assolutamente unica nell'universo del whisky. Che si tratti di whisky della distilleria o di bottiglie di marchi commerciali, questi imbottigliamenti, quando vengono messi in vendita, raggiungono i livelli più alti. Un consiglio per i collezionisti.
