Malt whisky emblematico della famosissima gamma The Six Classic Malts, lanciata alla fine degli anni '80, Lagavulin è diventato in pochi anni il whisky di malto torbato più popolare al mondo. Ben presto, tutta la produzione della distilleria, inizialmente riservata ai blend, tra cui il famoso White Horse, è stata esclusivamente orientata all'imbottigliamento di single malt per anticipare la futura domanda internazionale. Conosciuto fino ad allora nella versione invecchiata 12 anni, (una introdotta nei primi anni '70 con un'etichetta bianca su una bottiglia trasparente, l'altra negli anni '80 con una bottiglia verde e un'etichetta color crema), Lagavulin ha cominciato a proporre invecchiamenti di sedici anni ed è diventato così protagonista assoluto, per quasi un decennio. Nel 1997 è stata proposta una seconda versione di Classics Malts, vintage e frutto di una doppia maturazione. È un Lagavulin del 1979 maturato in botti di Pedro Ximenez che spezza il dominio incontrastato del Lagavulin 16 anni, prima che nel 2002 venisse proposta una versione di 12 anni, aggiornata secondo il gusto attuale (piccola partita invecchiata in botti di bourbon e a pieno grado). In seguito, diverse versioni vintage sono arrivate ad ampliare la gamma Lagavulin, ognuna più ricercata dell'altra, tra cui quelle disponibili solo presso il centro visitatori della distilleria. Ma è una versione di 40 anni, proposta nella gamma The Rare Malts Sélection nel 2016, che ha suscitato il massimo interesse, poiché è stata prodotta in solo cinque esemplari per tutto il mondo!
