Non è un caso che quindici delle distillerie scozzesi più apprezzate siano aziende familiari o indipendenti. Durante tutto il XX secolo, questo status le portò a cogliere tutte le opportunità commerciali che si presentarono, dando prova di grandi abilità di marketing, un settore essenziale per lo sviluppo e la sostenibilità del loro business. La distilleria Springbank rappresenta uno dei migliori protagonisti (e testimoni) delle nefandezze dell’industria del whisky scozzese nel XX secolo. Da questo clima nacquero due whisky eccezionali, di cui uno fu distribuito nei primi anni ‘70. Si trattava di un 50 anni, distillato il 29 dicembre 1919 (come menzionato nel certificato). L’altro invece uscì agli inizi degli anni ‘90 e fu il risultato di un re-imbottigliamento effettuato dalla distilleria. Ne vennero realizzati solo 24 esemplari in tutto il mondo, riportanti l’annata 1919. Ma questo clima si riflette anche nei primi anni 2000, quando sotto la pressione di uno stock segnato profondamente da anni di crisi produttiva (anni ‘80), la famiglia Mitchell decide di operare un cambiamento drastico del profilo del suo single malt e coglie l’occasione per cambiare la bottiglia.
