Accolta nel 1925 all’interno della “scuderia” John Walker & Sons (Distiller's Company Ltd), Mortlach ha un passato unico nella storia dell'industria del whisky. Fino al 1885 e per circa vent'anni, William Grant vi fece esperienza e imparò tutto sul funzionamento di una distilleria, prima di intraprendere quella che sarebbe diventata una storia di successo: la società William Grant & Sons, proprietaria di Glenfiddich. Mortlach è anche una delle pochissime distillerie ad aver ottenuto il diritto di distillare (tranne nel 1944) durante la Seconda guerra mondiale. Il suo profilo aromatico è connotato da un particolare metodo di distillazione, basato su una distillazione quasi tripla. Anche se sono piuttosto rari, Mortlach dispone di diversi imbottigliamenti specifici, che vanno dai 10 ai 12 anni di invecchiamento, presentati in bottiglia o anche versioni speciali. Dagli anni '90, segue il percorso tracciato da United Distillers & Vintners per tutte le sue distillerie e presenta diverse versioni nella gamma The Rare Malts Selection, Flora & Fauna e Manager's Dram.
