La «cuvée»
The wine has a golden appearance and a bouquet exuding a vast palette of aromas of flowers, fresh fruit and nuts, with a mineral peak. A highly sought-after wine; very concentrated, often austere in its youth, requiring a considerably longer ageing period than its Condrieu neighbours to reach its full expression. Sought after by many connoisseurs, this legendary wine is often more expensive than Condrieu.
This is a domaine worth having on your radar. It is atypical as it is a single domaine appellation nestling in the heart of the Condrieu AOC. Spanning barely 4 hectares, it is one of the smallest appellations in France, with a very exclusive output. Viogner is the only varietal cultivated and vinified here. The wines stand out from their Condrieu neighbours because they are aged in old casks. They are scarce and precious and require long cellaring in order to achieve their full aromatic complexity and mellowness. Château Grillet certainly boasts an iconic status in the Rhône Valley.
