Conosciuta principalmente nell’industria del rum, dei profumi e agro-alimentare, la distilleria Hampden comincia a uscire dall’anonimato nel 2009, quando il governo giamaicano decide di sganciarsi dalla società nazionale Jamaica Sugar Company e vende all’asta le sue azioni. La società Everglades Farms Ltd, gestita dalla famiglia Hussey, si aggiudica il lotto e diventa proprietaria di questo gioiellino, oggi considerato l’alter ego della distilleria scozzese Ardbeg. Questo legame con la Scozia non è casuale. Hampden Estate viene infatti acquistata nel 1748 da Robert Stirling, che lascia la contea scozzese del Perthshire nel 1742. La famiglia Hussey commercializza due versioni del proprio rum, tra cui un overproof conosciuto nell’universo dei bar e del settore HORECA. Ma il vero successo arriva nel 2017, quando l’azienda a conduzione familiare italiana Velier e quella francese LMDW iniziano a commercializzare i primi rum invecchiati. Oggi Hampden è considerato uno dei migliori rum in circolazione.
