Côtes du Luberon Cuvée Lourmarin Bastide Rhodares 2000

The wine

An AOC since 1988, the appellation of Côtes du Luberon spreads over 36 municipalities all located inside the Parc Naturel Régional du Luberon. The vineyard is spawled along the eponymous mountain range between Cavaillon and Manosque. This mountain once formed a land bridge at Secondaire between the Alpine Sea and the Mediterranean, and is bordered to the north by the Vallée du Calavon and to the south by the Vallée de la Durance.

The vines are grown on the hillsides on two different slopes, and produce highly expressive blended wines in all three colours. The reds are made from the traditional grape varieties of the southern Vallée du Rhône: Grenache Noir, Syrah, Carignan, Cinsault and Mourvèdre. Their typical character is the result of a combination of the soil type and climate. Many different soil types coexist here depending on the different positions of the vineyard: rocky soil on the old terraces, loose stones, sandy molassic soil, different plateaux. The climate here is Mediterranean, tempered by the Massif du Luberon (rising up to 1,125 metres) and treated to the refreshing winds of the Rhône Valley (mainly the Mistral and Tramontane), particularly in the eastern part of the appellation.

The red wines are full-bodied and aromatic, characterised by aromas of dark fruits mutating into truffle, leather and notes of undergrowth after five to six years. They can be kept for longer.
