WHAT ARE BORDEAUX EN PRIMEURS AND HOW DOES IT WORK?

WHAT ARE BORDEAUX EN PRIMEURS WINES? HOW CAN I BUY THEM?

Selling wine En Primeur is a Bordeaux-specific tradition. En Primeur wine is essentially a futures market – buy a Bordeaux wine this year that comes from the previous harvest, which won’t be bottled and released for another two years, and will be ready to drink in, say, 20 years. Sounds complicated? Maybe, but serious enthusiasts all over the world are itching to get started! At the start of April, Bordeaux châteaux welcome journalists, professionals and critics from all over the world to taste the previous year’s vintage and judge its quality. The wine world awaits their verdict with bated breath as it influences the choice of future buyers. The iDealwine team travels to Bordeaux each year to participate in the tasting events organised by Union des Grands Crus. It is not exactly the leisurely task that some might think it to be as the wines are very young and are still developing. What is more, tasters can sample over 200 per day! iDealwine has been selling En Primeur wine since 2021 after having a foothold on the Place de Bordeaux for 20 years.
