La distilleria Ardbeg è una delle icone dell’isola di Islay, conosciuta dagli intenditori e appassionati soprattutto per i suoi magnifici whisky torbati.

Scozia, Islay. Distilleria in produzione. Proprietari: LVMH Diageo.

Fondata nel 1815 da McDougall & Co. e stabilitasi a sud-est dell’Isola di Islay, in prossimità della croce di Kildalton, Ardbeg distilla da tempo il suo malto all’ombra dei suoi illustri colleghi e concorrenti: Lagavulin e Laphroaig. Fu sotto il patrocinio della famiglia McDonald (gruppo Glenmorangie Plc), divenuta proprietaria della distilleria dal 1997, che questa poté sviluppare tutto il suo potenziale e rivelare al pubblico i tesori nascosti nelle sue cantine. Tra il settembre e il novembre 1997, apparvero sul mercato ben tre bottiglie, di cui due divennero dei veri e propri classici: Ardbeg 17 anni, Ardbeg 1978 e Ardbeg Provenance 1974. Il decennio che seguì fu ricco di versioni single cask e cask strength, una più bella dell’altra, invecchiate in botti di sherry e bourbon. E fu grazie ad una nuova bottiglia dal vetro colorato e dall’estetica celtico-gotica che Ardbeg conquistò il mercato degli appassionati di malto con sentori di fuoco, torba e balsamo di tigre.
