Domain Antinori was founded in 1895 and it is the birthplace of the Tignanello wine, the first vintage of which came to fruition in 1970. The wine in question found great success abroad just a few years later. This is a fine, Tuscan cuvée made of Sangiovese (80%), Cabernet Sauvignon (15%) and Cabernet Franc (5%). It is matured in French oak barrels for 14 months. In the glass, this wine has an intense, ruby colour. On the nose, aromas of ripe, red fruits come to the fore. Tignanello is sought primarily for its structure and intense aromatics. Particularly fruity, it is at once powerful, rich and refined, with strong tannins and good persistence on the palate. It is a delightful cuvée as soon as it is bottled, though it still has good aging potential. It should be served at around 16°C. Some food pairing ideas include beef, tournedos Rossini and lamb.
Streets ahead of the many rustic (and high quality) productions of Italy, Tignanello is the embodiment of a great Tuscan wine: fruity and elegant and enjoyed by refined enthusiasts around the world. Alongside Ornellaia and Sassicaia wine, it belongs to the "Super Tuscans", an elite category of wines produced from imported French grape varieties, an initiative started in the 1960s that ushered in a new range of great Italian wines. Established in 1895, it was the prestigious Antinori estate that was responsible for Tignanello wine, the first vintage of which was produced in 1970. Four years later in 1974, Florentin Antinori sold his wine along with that of Sassicaia on a national scale, yet his wares failed to enthral aficionados. As a result, the owner decided to launch the two wines on the international market, where in contrast, they experienced a rush of incredible popularity. Mainly produced from the Sangiovese grape variety, Tignanello uses a significant proportion of Cabernet in its assemblage and is aged for 14 months in small French oak barrels, another great `import' of the sixties.
