Natural wines (known in French as vins nature), also referred to as sulphite-free wines or wines without added sulphur, are produced without, or with only very small amounts of added sulphites. These wines are generally produced using organic methods, whether certified or not, for consistency, and vinified in a deliberately low-intervention style (native yeasts for fermentation, no added inputs, etc.). The aim is clear: to produce wines that are closer to the fruit and terroir they come from, less “dressed up”, and more transparent in style. For some drinkers, especially those who struggle to tolerate sulphites, this also has a health-related appeal. These wines have a reputation for being more fragile, yet in reality, when produced by skilled winemakers and stored correctly, natural wines can age every bit as gracefully as their conventional counterparts. Many are suitable for long cellaring, particularly from the renowned names available on iDealwine 😊. It’s worth remembering that some of the finest wines fall into the natural wine category: Overnoy in Jura, Selosse in Champagne, Bizot or Prieuré Roch in Burgundy, Richard Leroy in the Loire Valley to name but a few.
