A. Staub & Cie is a brandy merchant founded in 1858 by Swiss businessman Auguste Staub. The company survived the Phylloxera crisis unscathed thanks to its abundant stocks and by sourcing grapes from less afflicted vineyards in the north-west and south of the appellation, even if that meant installing its stills there. As these vineyards were not yet part of the appellation, Staub began producing brandy using the same methods used for cognac. The company was awarded a gold medal at the Paris Exposition Universelle in 1889. It is now located in Grande Champagne, in the heart of the appellation. It has its own cellars, where it ages and blends its own cognacs and brands, for which it is a major exporter.
