Joseph Washington Dant was a Kentucky-based distiller in the 1830s. He was famous for his use of a log still, a still created from a tree trunk, a cheap alternative for those unable to afford a copper still. After hollowing out the trunk, a copper pipe was inserted inside. Mash was then poured in, with the steam passing through the pipe for distillation. Schenley bought the Dant Gesthemane distillery in 1952, but it closed in the early 1960s. Production was then moved to Bernheim and George T. Stagg. J.W. Dant is today produced by Heaven Hill.
