Alcoholes Finos Dominicanos (A.F.D.) is a huge distillery in the Dominican Republic that opened in May 2010. It has 4,000 employees and produces 20 million litres of rum every year. 80,000 hectares of sugar cane are produced on its own estate and its partners’ estates. One of its more unusual characteristics is the use of bagasse (crushed sugar cane stalks left over after juice has been extracted) to produce the energy used to run the distillery.
