Vintage description 2003

The Rhône Valley was particularly heavily hit by the heatwave of 2003, with vineyards undergoing severe water stress. Châteauneuf-du-Pape experienced some timely rainfall in September, allowing the grapes to reach sufficient levels of maturity. Estates that harvested later on emerged top of the vintage. The others produced solid wines with high alcohol content, requiring a few years to develop and refine. Gigondas produced some stunning wines.
