Why would I want to sell my wines?

  • My tastes have changed, I don’t like some of my wines anymore
  • My wines are ready to drink, and I won’t have the time to drink them all
  • Some bottles reach such high prices that I refuse to open them
  • I need some cash flow
  • I want to continue finding and tasting new gems
  • Who can sell their wine?

Selling one’s wines is simple, and anyone can do it, be they professionals or private collectors. iDealwine can sell your wines at auction or fixed-price sale, whether it’s one bottle or several thousand bottles. Selling wines on iDealwine is open to residents of the following countries: France, Belgium, Luxemburg, Holland, German, Italian, Spanish and Portuguese. You can send us your wines by post, or we can come collect them from you.

What sort of wine can you sell?

The range of wines eligible for resale is vast, whether they are collectable wines, rare fine wines or unusual gems. iDealwine is a specialist of sought-after old vintages, rare, specialist wines and organic, biodynamic and natural wines. The classics also sell very well of course. To be accepted for sale on iDealwine, the wines must successfully pass our authentication and condition tests and must be worth over €15.

Where should I sell my wine?

With almost 20 years of experience reselling wine (created in 2000, iDealwine is one of the first wine e-merchants), iDealwine has established itself as the best site to resell your wine.

    • iDealwine has been France’s leading wine auctioneer for several years, as well as one of the top on-line wine merchants for wine lovers (fixed-price with allocations from domains and buying from private collectors). This gives you two options when selling your wines: if you’re in a hurry, you can sell your cellar for a fixed price, with payment immediately after (on condition that your wines pass our authenticity checks) or, if you have a little more time, you can sell your wines at auction, with international exposure, lasting around ten days.
    • iDealwine is the French specialist in the fine wine market and is therefore best-placed to advise you on the sale of your wines, the prices to ask, the duration, how to organize your lots… iDealwine’s price estimates, the WineDex indices, the publication of our annual auction barometer, Angélique de Lencquesaing’s monthly appearances on BFM Business.
    • The iDealwine team is made up of around 35 qualified wine professionals (most of whom are WSET-certified) who will guide you through every step of your sale, from the free estimation to final payment.
    • iDealwine is used by more than 500,000 wine enthusiasts in 60 countries. This incomparable exposure guarantees you the best price when selling your wines.
    • iDealwine has experience selling wines from all over the world, with more than 150,000 bottles coming through our platform every year. Our work is solely dedicated to selling wines, our only profession and speciality in the past 20 years.
    • Given its specialist auction standpoint, iDealwine has built up a community of wine lovers – who buy both at auction and fixed-price – who are prepared to part with large sums of money for the wines of their dreams.
    • iDealwine is a secure, trustworthy site, with payment guaranteed. The company is often quoted as an example in the public auction “Conseil Volontaire des Ventes”, France’s regulating authority of auctions. We do everything possible to protect the identity of our sellers.

iDealwine is the most efficient and professional site for selling your wines in the best conditions. The company is, what’s more, widely recognized by wine professionals for its professionality and rigueur, as the many press articles about us can attest to.

When should I sell my wine?

To the question, when should you sell one wine rather than another in order to get the best price, here are our top tips.

    • First of all, you must take into account the age of the wine: in auctions, wine lovers are looking for wines in mature vintages, wines which are almost ready to drink. This is even truer of wines that are not rare when they are released by the domain (when there are large quantities produced), for instance, with many Bordeaux crus. On the other hand, for some domains, Burgundian for example, the wines are rare already when they leave the domain and the lots are therefore already very sought-after even when young; even in this case though, it’s worth aging your wines some years if you can (and if you have a cellar with perfect storing conditions). The most important thing to know is therefore when your wines will reach maturity. If you’re not sure how to find this out, don’t hesitate to ask our team to advise you.
    • Another criterion to take into account is the birthyear effect. Every year, we notice that birthyear vintages do very well (for example, in 2019, all vintages ending in 9).
    • Lastly, and this is probably the most difficult criterion to succeed in, is choosing an opportune moment to sell a domain that is gaining in momentum. To do so, keep yourself informed, watch the way the market is going (by spending time on iDealwine for example ?), read the specialist press and iDealwine’s auction reports.

And if you want to know what time of the year you should sell your wines, there isn’t one right answer! In fact, given our international clientele, the season effect is attenuated: when the weather’s great in France and people are spending less time in front of their computers, in Asia, it’s full monsoon season… Moreover, iDealwine adapts its delivery services to the variations in temperature (isothermal packaging, no delivery the day before a weekend or bank holiday so that the wines are delivered as quickly as possible, shipment postponed in case of extreme weather conditions). It’s worth remembering that supposedly ‘slow’ periods (the start of the year and summer) can be a good time to sell; given that fewer wines are for sale, the wines have better visibility and less competition. Finally, some global events play an important role, for instance Chinese New Year, an intense buying period.

How do I sell my wine?

The process is simple, fast and efficient on iDealwine. All you need to do is request a free estimation of the wines you’d like to sell then, if you’d like to go ahead with the sale, just choose how you’d like to sell your wine (at auction or fixed-price) and organize the delivery/collection of your wine. Once we have the wines at our warehouse, our team of experts verify the authenticity and condition of the bottles. Your wines will be put for sale three to four weeks (maximum) after this step. You will receive payment within 35 days of the wines being sold. Seller’s fees (which pay for the authentication services, insurance and storage) are deducted from the final auction results. On the other hand, if you choose to sell your cellar to us at fixed-price, you will receive payment straight after the wines have been checked by our team. If your wines aren’t sold during the first auction, we offer to put them back for sale for free. If they don’t find a buyer after three auctions, we contact you to suggest modifying certain prices or to split up big lots.

Tips for successfully selling your wines

To succeed in selling your wines, we suggest following the advice given by our team of experts, who will recommend starting prices which correspond to the market and how to organize your lots. It’s often judicious, for instance, to put some lots for sale at a slightly lower price than their estimate, creating a “buzz” among bidders. We also advise selling single lots where possible, and not selling too many of the same wines at the same time.

You’ve sold your wines… now what?

Many wine enthusiasts, having sold their wines on iDealwine and made space in their cellar, see a good opportunity buy new bottles that are better-matched with their current tastes – there’s something for everyone!
