The wine
Harvested in mid-October, the Nebbiolo grapes are macerated on their skins in stainless steel tanks for 30 days until fermentation is complete. The wine is then matured for four years in large barrels. A few years' keeping are highly recommended to allow it the time it needs to refine its aromatic bouquet with notes of red berries, tobacco, aromatic herbs and balsam. As with most Nebbiolo wines, fruit is not the dominant flavour. However, the wine does offer a seductively austere yet mineral palate, along with a long, floral finish.
About the Producer Aldo Conterno
In the 19th century, Giovanni Conterno joined his father on the family domaine in Monforte d'Alba (between Turin and the coast). This domaine was an export success from the very outset with its Barolo Reserve, which was only produced in the best years. In the late 1930s, Giovanni handed the baton to his son Giacomo, who was followed in turn by his sons Giovanni and Aldo. However, a few years later, and after some time spent in California, Aldo decided to set up his own domaine, Poderi Aldo Conterno, in 1969 (also in Monforte d'Alba). Today, the domaine spans 25 hectares in the heart of the Barolo wine region and produces renowned wines.
