In the 14th century, the Popes built a residence in Châteauneuf, far from the drama of the court of Avignon. Pope John XXII built the fortress of which today only the ruins remain. Besotted with Châteauneuf wine, the Pope expanded the vineyard and ensured its reputation was kept alive. With the following centuries came a reinforcement of papal viticulture and 1929 saw the official emergence of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape AOC. The appellation enjoys diversity in terms of land, made up of staggered plateaux and terraces. The Domaine du Vieux Télégraphe estate takes its name from Claude Chappe, the inventor of the optical telegraph, who built one of his relay towers on the estate's highest point in 1792. Owned by the Brunier family for over a century, the estate is currently overseen by Frédéric and Daniel Brunier. Located in the south-eastern section of the appellation on the rocky plateau of La Crau, the single owner vineyard features land that is characteristic of Châteauneuf du Pape, made up of rolled pebbles that trap heat during the day and release it come nightfall. This phenomenon ensures grapes reach a high stage of maturity. The estate has a low yield policy and prioritises sustainable farming techniques. After hand harvesting followed by traditional ageing (ageing in concrete vats for 9 months, followed by oak barrels for 8 to 12 months), the wine is bottled without being filtered. All of these details, which have been ramped up since the early 1980s, result in intense and balanced wines featuring aromas of dark fruits, Provencal herbs and truffles, with peppery, spiced notes that end on a liquorice-infused high. These wines can be enjoyed from their earliest age. The property produces a second elegant wine: the Vieux Mas des Papes.*The above information describes the wine and is not vintage specific.

The "bio" designation covers certified wines produced by biodynamic or organic methods, sustainably produced wines, and "environmentally friendly" wines that are not officially certified. See the blog article for more information.
The "biodynamic" designation covers all estates certified for using biodynamic methods or in the process of converting to biodynamics. They are accredited by one of the two official bodies, Demeter or Biodyvin. All wines produced by biodynamic methods are also certified as organic.
The "organic" designation covers all estates certified for using organic methods or in the process of converting to organic agriculture. They are accredited by one of the bodies approved by the Ministry of Agriculture, such as Ecocert.
The "sustainable" designation covers all estates certified for using sustainable or High Environmental Value (level 3 Environmental Certification) techniques.
The "environmentally friendly" designation refers to estates practising environmentally friendly wine-growing techniques, but that have not opted for certification. These estates may have adopted biodynamic principles (non-certified) or simply no longer use chemical products.
All designations apply to recent vintages.
