  • Since 2004 the Zind cuvée has been produced exclusively with grapes from the Clos Windsbuhl vineyard in Hunawihr (2/3 Chardonnay and 1/3 Auxerrois). The Humbrecht family made this decision having found that during the 80s, the Auxerrois wines were losing their acidity due to persistant changes in the climate. They therefore decided to add Chardonnay to the blend to keep the cuvée’s freshness. The Chardonnay vines were first planted in 1989 and were perfectly suited to this ancient limestone terroir. Since Chardonnay is not a recognised Alsatian variety, this cuvée bears the classification Vin de Table or rather is commercialised without the Indication Géographique. The resulting wines are fruit-forward with typical Chardonnay tasting notes (buttery, almonds), but punctuated with citrus aromas translating the limestone soil. The age of the vines at Clos Windsbuhl result in more characterful wines with great tension on the finish.

Zind Humbrecht was created in 1959 as a result of the merger of the wine producing operations of the Humbrecht family in Gueberschwihr and the Zind family in Wintzenheim. The Humbrechts are a very old wine-making family, who have been passing their skills from one generation to the next since the Thirty Years War (1620). The property has 40 hectares and is managed according to biodynamic principles. Zind Humbrecht has long been established as one of Alsace's most reputable producers. Léonard Humbrecht has placed quality over quantity, developing superb terroirs that have been neglected because they are too difficult to work, such as Rangen in Thann. Today, Olivier Humbrecht and his father are only interested in exceptional terroirs; their insistence on quality, combined with virtuoso technical ability, enable them to produce exceptionally dense, complex wines that are always respectful of the characteristics of the grape varieties and the terroir.
