The wine
Givry Premier Cru La Grande Berge Domaine Ragot is made from vines that are between fifteen and fifty years old, planted on an east-facing parcel in the southern part of the appellation which enjoys much sunshine and is well drained on stony soil. The Pinot Noir grapes are grown over 2.14 hectares (shared between 5 parcels), and the vineyard is cultivated sustainably with harvests and sorting carried out by hand. There is a 4-6 day cold maceration that is followed by 15 days of fermentation in thermoregulated vats. The final step, maturation, takes 12-15 months and happens in oak barrels (30% new wood). Fruity with developing aromas of undergrowth, this wine is full and fine and offers great length on the palate. Pair the cuvée with a dish like braised beef or roasted veal pie.
About the Producer Ragot
The Ragot family already had a vineyard in Mercurey in 1760 and a century later Louis Ragot created his wine domaine in Givry. Since 2008, Nicolas Ragot has been in charge of the family domaine where he has worked since 2002. The vineyard extends over 9 hectares within the Givry appellation (6.5ha of Pinot Noir, 2 of Chardonnay and the rest in Aligoté), with a third of premier crus. This domaine produces a consistent range of wines with fine cuvées and provides good value for money. (It is regularly selected by the Revue du Vin de France's best reasonably priced wine Guide ).
