IGT Toscana
The Toscana IGT (Indicazione Geografica Tipica) appellation covers white, rosé and red wines produced throughout Tuscany. The grape varieties used can be local, such as Sangiovese and Trebbiano, or international, such as Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Syrah and Pinot Blanc. The popularity of IGT Toscana red wines has grown, due particularly to the American wine critic Robert Parker, and some have been called “Super Tuscans”. These wines have a great capacity for ageing, a tannin structure and an aromatic richness that can be compared to Bordeaux. The best known are without doubt the wines produced in Bolgheri, like Tenuta San Guido (Sassicaia), Tenuta Dell’Ornellaia (Massetto) and Le Macchiole but other regions in Tuscany have also produced some great names, such as Gianfranco Soldera, Marchesi Antinori Tignanello and Bibi Graetz.
