Large formats
Large-format bottles of wine or Champagne are synonymous with sharing, conviviality, and festive moments – they offer the perfect way to celebrate with more to pour, more to share, and more to enjoy than a standard bottle. The most common large formats, in ascending order, are: Magnum (1.5L), Double Magnum or Jeroboam (3L), Rehoboam (4.5L), Methuselah (6L), Salmanazar (9L), Balthazar (12L), Nebuchadnezzar (15L), and Solomon (18L). These slightly enigmatic, biblically inspired names can be memorised using various mnemonics. Beyond their striking presence at the table, large formats offer real advantages. Not only do they age more slowly and more gracefully, thanks to the lower oxygen-to-wine ratio, but they also tend to command greater value, owing to their rarity and superior ageing potential.
