Barolo DOCG
The Barolo DOCG (Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita), which is even more famous than the Barbaresco DOCG, is located in the Piedmont to the west of the town of Alba. These legendary red wines are aged for 36 months, including 18 months in tuns or barrels, and boast exceptional ageing potential. The only grape variety allowed is Nebbiolo. It produces light-coloured wines with powerful tannins and notes of cherries, dried flowers (rose) and plums, developing leather, tobacco and humus notes with laying down. The vineyards lie at an altitude of between 150 and 500 metres, giving the wines a certain freshness. A variety of soil types, made up of limestone marl, sandstone and clay, produce unique wines expressing sense of place. Must-try estates include Angelo Gaja, Cappellano and Vietti, as well as Luigi Pira and Fratelli Alessandria.
