Margaux

Recognised as an AOC since 1954, Margaux is the largest and southernmost appellation in the Médoc, as well as the closest to Bordeaux. It is also one of the most renowned, home to the greatest number of 1855 Grands Crus Classés, with 21 of them across its 1,500 hectares.

The soils are mainly clay and limestone with gravelly hilltops. The grape varieties are the Médoc classics, i.e. Cabernet Sauvignon (54%), Merlot (38%), Petit Verdot (4%) and Cabernet Franc (3%).

Margaux wines are particularly renowned for their great suppleness and delicate character, often being referred to as “the most feminine wines of Bordeaux.” They are typically characterised by subtle aromas of red and black berries and floral notes like violet or rose. On the palate, they are lighter than the Bordeaux average, with a silky and superbly velvety texture. They also boast excellent ageing potential, with the best easily lasting upwards of 20 years.

Among the most renowned properties in the appellation are Château Margaux, Château Palmer, Château Brane-Cantenac, Château Rauzan-Ségla, Château Dufort-Vivens and Château Palmer.
