Hospices de Nuits-Saint-Georges Auction (8 March 2026)

The 64th edition of the Hospices de Nuits-Saint-Georges auction took place on Sunday 9 March 2025 at Château du Clos de Vougeot and was organised by iDealwine for the first time.

Nearly €860,000 was raised, an impressive result given the historically low 2024 harvest, decreasing the volume up for auction by 76%. Bottles and magnums from past vintages were also auctioned, an exception for this sale. All lots up for auction (35.5 pièces, 240 bottles and 120 magnums) were all sold. A 41.5% increase in the average price was recorded, a figure close to 2022's record. The charity pièce raised €53,900 for the assosiation Coucou Nous Voilou, which was represent at the auction by its founder Marc Salem, and longtime supporters Chantal Ladesou and Philippe Candeloro. Please read our article about the results of the auction for more information.

The next auction will take place on Sunday 8 March 2026.

What is the Hospices de Nuits-Saint-Georges auction?

This auction, which is a major event in the world of fine Burgundian wines and the wine world in general, brings together wine enthusiasts from around the globe. About 150 pièces of roughly 20 different wines (a pièce is a 228-litre barrel) go under the hammer in aid of Hospices Civils de Beaune, a hospital in Burgundy. It groups together the Beaune medical centre, the hospitals of Arnay-le-Duc, Seurre and Nuits-St-Georges, and the training institute for nurses and auxiliaries. In 2024, the auction raised €2.281 million for the hospital group.

Every year, a charity pièce is auctioned to raise funds for a separate charitable organisation which changes each year. In 2024, for example, the Clément-Drevon Foundation from Dijon was chosen. The organisation funds medical research in the surrounding area and helps young researchers travel around. The €66,980 raised by the sale of the charity pièce went straight to the foundation.

What can you buy at the auction?

During the auction, no bottles will be up for auction but rather Burgundian pièces (228 litre barrels). There are usually about 150 of them going under the hammer. Each one will contain one of the 19 different wines produced from the 12 hectares of vines owned by the Hospices de Nuits-Saint-Georges which are located in the principal vineyards of Nuits-Saint-Georges. It possesses eight village plots that are blended together to create four different wines and nine premier crus, which include the Les Didiers single-ownership vineyard and a plot of Gevrey-Chambertin Villages called Champs-Chenys.

How does the auction work?

This auction, which will take place on Sunday 9 March 2025 and hosted by the auction house iDealwine, will be held in person at Clos de Vougeot and online on the Drouot Live website.

A charity auction in aide of the Nuits-Saint-Georges hospital

Apart from the proceeds raised by the sale of the charity pièce (288-litre barrel) to raise funds for a charitable organisation other than the Hospices de Nuits-Saint-Georges, the entire profit of the auction goes to the Hospices de Nuits-Saint-Georges. This winemaking hospital, founded in 1270 – two centuries before the Hospices de Beaune – is a public health institution nowadays. New buildings were opened in 2018. The main focus is care and support of the elderly and palliative care, but the hospital offers classic healthcare too.

The 2024 vintage at Domaine des Hospices de Nuits-Saint-Georges

During this complicated year weather-wise, we started the harvest on Thursday 19 September after a sunny, windy week which allowed ripening to finish under excellent conditions. Harvesting also took place under favourable weather which allowed the grapes to retain their full potential. While there may be a lack of quantity, there surely isn’t a lack of quality. The first wines have not yet finished alcoholic fermentation but initial tastings reveal deeply coloured wines, full of red fruit flavours and silky tannins. They are true to their origins, very Burgundian in style, with intense colours. We will find out the rest when we remove the wines from the vat. A vinification trend is emerging with fermentations that start quickly and macerations that are shorter than in previous vintages.
