Château Les Carmes Haut-Brion can be found, just like its neighbours, Château Haut-Brion and Château la Mission Haut-Brion, on the famous Graves plateau in the Pessac-Léognan appellation to the south-west of Bordeaux. From 1584 to 1789, it was owned by Carmelite monks, who first established the reputation of this property. During the French Revolution, however, it was seized then sold at auction. Acquired by the Chantecailles family, it remained with them for over a hundred years.
With its Philippe Starck designed cellar, Les Carmes Haut-Brion clearly stated its ambition since it was bought by Patrice and Diane Pichet in 2010. There’s no doubt that it’s one of the most dynamic Pessac-Léognan properties in recent years. This cru non-classé is completely unusual, especially when it comes to the amount of Cabernet Franc in its blends (on average, it amounts to 40%). The wines are sublime, ripe, and flavourful. A château followed very closely by many wine lovers.
The château owns Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon vines which are all about 40 years old and grown according to traditional methods with reduced yields. The plants benefit from the influences of the thick, sandy, clay Graves soil that has a limestone sub-soil.
