Vintage description 2000 South Rhone

An excellent vintage where the northern wines are generally better than the southern wines. Characterised by significant weather variations and a very abundant harvest, this vintage fails to rival the exception year of 1999. In Condrieu, the wines are rich and perfectly-balanced. They surpass most wines from 1999. Côtes-Rôties 2000 wines are supple and fruity with a beautiful aromatic complexity and should be consumed before the 1999 wines. Less fine, the Saint-Jospeh wines are well-rounded and structured. In Hermitage and Croze-Hermitage, this was the year of the wine-maker. Quality levels were mixed. Whites are clearly superior to reds. Some are too alcoholic and imbalanced. Others offer wonderful concentration, with generous, velvety wines. The best of them are still not as good as the wines of 1999. The Cornas wines are splendid, with perfect maturity and extreme levels of concentration. An appellation to watch. In the south in terms of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, wines are dense, fruity and powerful. The wines boast wonderful texture and substantial potential to age.
