Vintage description 2004 Burgundy

After a superb spring, the unsettled weather in the summer (localised hail storms, little sun and a cool august) heralded a very average vintage. But a particularly mild September, marked by dry, hot winds speeded up the ripening process considerably and maintained the berries in reasonable sanitary condition. However, the harvest had to be severely sorted and only the best grapes were kept. After a 2003 vintage of very poor yields, the production volumes of 2004 were much more encouraging, about 10% above average. Elegant and racy, the red wines express themselves magnificently. They have a fine tannic structure and acidic notes of small red fruits. They need to drunk fairly quickly and almost certainly before the 2002 wines. The whites, ample and stylish, have a high aromatic pureness of white flowers, a certain freshness and a good balance of mellowness and acidity.
