Barolo DOCG Bricco Delle Viole G.D Vajra 2008

The wine

This extremely specialised estate located in the village of Barolo, in the Italian Piedmont region, produces wines that are much sought-after by connoisseurs of bottles designed for long-term cellaring, balancing finesse with a certain power. This Barolo from Bricco delle Viole, one of the estate’s oldest parcels, is made from Nebbiolo grapes, as required by the appellation’s specifications. Here, the grapes are encouraged to draw the nutrients they require to thrive from the clay and limestone soils, in a stable, temperate climate at an altitude of between 400 and 480 metres. The estate practises organic and biodynamic viticulture to showcase the terroir in all its glory. Similarly, the vinification process is meticulous and involves pressing the grapes before macerating them with the skins. Fermentation lasts between one month to 40 days, still with the skins, and precedes a long ageing period of 42 to 48 months in large Slavic oak casks.
With excellent ageing potential, the wine displays very delicate tannins in a powerful package. A natural acidity enlivens the whole and gives the wine great ageing potential. The wine also displays aromas of red and black berries, dried rose and sweet spices.

About the Producer G.D Vajra

G.D Vajra is located in the west of the Barolo region in the heart of Piedmont. It was created after Aldo Vaira fell in love with the land while spending a summer there at the age of 15. He started his winemaking project in 1970 when he was not yet an adult, leaving the town for the countryside. The beginning was intense as he took winemaking courses at the university in Alba during the day and him and his wife Milena worked in the vineyards in the evenings and on weekends. Under their watchful eyes, the property grew in size to reach the 40 hectares that make it today. The vines are cultivated with care, according to organic and biodynamic principles on terraces sitting at altitude. The wines quickly made a name for themselves. Avoiding the overuse of wood, Vaira preferred - and still does - to create delicate, elegant wines. In order to find the perfect balance, long maceration and maturation are favoured.

Today, Aldo and Milena Vaira are joined by their three adult children who also manage a five-hectares estate in Serralunga d’Alba that was bought in 2008.
