Inferno is a landscape of terraced vineyards clinging to steep granite slopes, notoriously arduous to cultivate, yet capable of producing wines of striking minerality, fragrance and persistence.
More infoNebbiolo, the star grape of Piedmont, thrives in the small Alpine vineyard of Valtellina, near the Swiss border, where the appellation is divided into several sub-zones: Grumello, Sassella, Valgella and Inferno. In Inferno, the vines are planted on terraces clinging to steep granite slopes, inaccessible and extremely difficult to cultivate. An ‘inferno’ indeed for local winegrowers who tend them, yet these harsh conditions give rise to lively Nebbiolo wines with velvety tannins. For this cuvée, the hand-harvested grapes undergo more than 100 days of maceration in large wooden vats, followed by around 15 months of ageing in foudres (large oak tuns) and vats.
Light and elegant, this Nebbiolo opens with aromas of red berries, faded rose, undergrowth and medicinal herbs. The palate is lively and mineral, structured by very fine-grained tannins and carrying through to a very long finish. A cuvée that brings us a little closer to paradise.
About the Producer Arpepe
Situated in the heart of the Italian Alpes in the magnificent Valtellina valley found in Lombardy, the Pelizzatti Perego family create their brilliant wines. They have been caring for wines in the region for more than 150 years and the domain is here today thanks to its namesake: Arturo Pelizzatti Perego. An ambitious visionary, Arturo bought back the family domain in 1984 with the goal of creating delicate Vatellina Nebbiolos that would be known around the world. He did just that and today the name “ARPEPE” has become a standard for Italian wines. Now run by Arturo’s children, the property sitting at 700 metres above sea level use the knowledge passed down through five generations to continue making the domain’s brilliant organic wines of which only 60,000 bottles are produced in a year.
