More info

Operating largely under the radar, Domaine Fontaine-Gagnard was established during the 1980s by Richard Fontaine and Laurence Gagnard who now manage a dozen hectares of vines. They craft this red Chassagne-Montrachet made from Pinot Noir grapes grown traditionally within one of the most beautiful ‘climats’ of the appellation. There, enjoying the influence of the region's semi-continental climate, the vines draw the nutrients needed for their development from a soil composed of limestone and marl. In the cellar, this respect for tradition continues and the wine is aged in oak barrels for anywhere from 14 months to a year and a half.
Although powerful, fans of this wine have been known to describe it as “having a calm force”. It is appreciated for its ruby-red colour with violet glints, which turn towards a more orange colour in time. In its youth the wine offers aromas of fresh red and black fruits and sweet spices. It has hints of musk, leather and humus, leading to a palate structured by firm tannins that offer good cellaring potential and the possibility of pairing with dishes packed with character.
