Breedekloof Alheit Vineyards Lost and Found 2019

The wine

The Muscat of Alexandria, also known as Hanepoot, is perfectly adapted to hot, dry climates and produces sweet wines that are naturally powerful, elegant and fragrant. This variety first displays a light green colour that changes to golden yellow when fully ripe. Harvested in mid-March, the grapes are carefully laid out to dry for a fortnight on wooden racks and shade cloths in the open air. Once dry, the grapes are pressed for around five days. The particularly concentrated juice is then fermented for over a year in stainless steel vats.
The bouquet displays cheerful, sun-drenched aromas of apricot and marmalade. The fine acidity melts into the fruit flavours bursting with caramel through a rich, unctuous texture, leading to a lingering and deliciously fruity finish.

About the Producer Alheit Vineyards

This property, established in 2010 by Chris and Suzaan Alheit, is located in South Africa. Before embarking on this venture, this gifted couple had already begun their journey both domestically and internationally working in California, Australia, and even in Germany, where they explored the magnificent terroir of the Mosel region. Through these experiences, they came to appreciate the importance of terroir, which they elevate through the least interventionist methods of viticulture and vinification possible. Unsurprisingly, the crops are hand-harvested, and native yeasts play a significant role in the winery. Convinced that white wines from the Cape Town region are really unique, they cultivate old Chenin Blanc vines, allowing the grapes to undergo alcoholic fermentation in wood. Their outstanding expertise allows the wines to unveil genuine elegance, dispelling any preconceived notions we may hold about southern hemisphere wines.
