About the Producer Château Philippe Le Hardi

Born on 17 January 1342, Philip le Hardi, son of King Jean le Hardi, took possession of the Santenay property and the château in 1372. He decided to change the way Burgundy wines were made by banning the use of Gamay grapes to promote terroir wines. His son Jean-Sans-Peur, followed by his grandson Philippe Le Bon and then Charles Le Téméraire, took over the reins of the estate one after the other. For almost three centuries, the château was owned by high-ranking nobles, until the revolution, when it escaped destruction. Over the years, the estate changed hands through a series of marriages. The Pidault family, who ran the vineyard from 1965 to 1976, carried out extensive renovation and expansion work, planting new plots of vines in Mercurey. The estate now covers 98 hectares of vines, 65% of which are planted with Pinot Noir and 35% with Chardonnay, nestling in Gevrey-Chambertin to the south and Mercurey to the north. Aware of its environmental impact and to preserve the environment, the vineyard started to convert to organic viticulture in 2021.
