Vougeot 1er Cru Domaine Bertagna 1978

The wine

Vougeot is the smallest commune in the Côte de Nuits. The name Vougeot comes from the river Vouge that runs through the appellation. If we take off the 50 hectares of the mythic Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru (delimited and planted by the Cîteaux monks, today divided up between 80 owners), and the houses and roads from its 80 hectares, only a dozen hectares would be left of the Vougeot vineyards, four climats of which are classified as premiers crus (Clos de la Perrière, Clos Blanc, Les Crâs and Les Petits Vougeots). The best of these are situated to the north, near to the Clos, and are unmistakably related in character to this great wine. Finally, 2.5 hectares of Vougeot Premier Cru produce white wine, such as for example, the Clos Blanc de Vougeot. Red Vougeot bears a strong resemblance to its illustrious neighbours. A deep and luminous coloured wine which develops aromas of violet and small fruits (Morello cherry and blackcurrant). When older, it leans towards undergrowth, fallen leaves and truffle over gamey notes. In the mouth, it has a four-sided structure but its tannins are nonetheless delicate.
