Jumilla Pie Franco Viñas Viejas Casa Castillo 2018
The wine
The Jumilla appellation, located in Spain’s South Eastern Murcia region, is one of the oldest in the area. The vines for Casa Castillo’s Pie Franco Viñas Viejas grow on limestone and sandy soils at relatively high altitude, allowing the grapes to ripen slowly and develop deep aromatic complexity. The grapes are harvested by hand, with careful selection of the ripest, healthiest bunches. The fruit is meticulously sorted, then fermented in temperature-controlled stainless-steel vats, with a long maceration to extract maximum colour and aroma. No œnological inputs are added, preserving the purest expression of the terroir. The wine is aged for 14 months in a combination of French and American oak casks, which lends structure and subtle oak nuances without overpowering the fruit.
The wine shows an intense red, almost black, hue with purplish glints. The nose is powerful and complex, marked by ripe black fruit, liquorice, spice and leather. On the palate, it is rich and velvety, carried by silky yet firm tannins.
