The wine
Travel to Portugal and meet the Pato family. With a history spanning several centuries, the family produces a wide range of distinctive wines, including this Quinta do Ribeirinho Baga. As its name suggests, it is made exclusively from Baga, Portugal’s emblematic native grape variety. The vines are planted across 1.2 hectares in the Bairrada region, south of the Douro Valley and Porto. They grow in sandy clay soils and are around 30 years old. Yields here are exceptionally low, with each vine producing the equivalent of just one bottle. The estate’s aim is to craft a full-bodied wine, so rigorous fruit selection is carried out at harvest.
Following manual harvests and traditional vinification, the wine is aged for many months in oak casks The result is a wine with aromas of blackberry, plum and blackcurrant, complemented by notes of mint and sweet spice. On the palate, it strikes a fine balance between tannic structure and acidity. Precise, pure and persistent, it is a wine of remarkable finesse.
