Château du Tertre 5ème Grand Cru Classé 2014
The wine
Château du Tertre's wine is full-bodied with rich fruit, and develops the subtle aromas of violets that are characteristic of the appellation. It is powerful and perfectly balanced.
Located on the higher ground in the appellation, Château du Tertre's 52-hectare vineyard, with gravelly, sandy soil, has the particularity of being a single block of vines entirely surrounded by forest. A 1855 Cinquième Grand Cru Classé, the property was created by Irishman Pierre Mitchell, the inventor of the Bordeaux bottle, before being passed on to several illustrious owners. have left their mark on the property. In 1960, the property was purchased by the Capbern Gasqueton family, the owners of Calon Ségur, at which time the entire vineyard was replanted after the devastating frost of 1956. The property was given a new lease of life in 1997, when it was purchased by Eric Albada Jelgersma. The Dutch businessman was already familiar with Margaux, having acquired Château Giscours a few years previously. Today, the estate is planted with 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot, 10% Petit Verdot and 10% Cabernet Franc, all of which have an average age of 15 years old. Maturation lasts for 16 months for the grand vin and 12 months for the second vin, with about 50% new barrels. The estate is now managed by the Helfrich Family ( who own Les Grands Chais de France), with Cynthia Capelaere at the head.
