Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru Frédéric Magnien 2012
The wine
Legend has it that a long time ago the Corton terroir was planted solely with red grape varieties, which were Charlemagne’s favourite. Unfortunately, the ruby-coloured wine stained his beard which vexed his spouse. The emperor decided to remove all of the red varieties and to replace them with white grapes. These Corton-Charlemagne vines thrive in marly soil rich in clay and climb steep hills with a 20 to 23% gradient. Located at 280 to 330 metres high, the Chardonnay plots benefit from a balanced and less-invasive form of viticulture which respects organic farming techniques.
The golden colour, worthy of the best grands crus, opens with intense aromas of white fruit, underlined with hints of vanilla and almond. The full-bodied and generous mouthfeel accentuates these aromas, which blend wonderfully with notes of lime tree. The finishing notes reveal a very subtle saltiness. This cuvée is guaranteed to age delightfully well.
