Escarpment

Escarpment Winery is an unmissable name in New?Zealand’s wine landscape. Established in the 1990s by one of the world’s foremost Pinot Noir winemakers, this 24-hectare estate beautifully captures the essence of its country’s unique terroirs.

Let’s head to New?Zealand, home to the remarkable Escarpment Winery. Founded over 20 years ago by the exceptionally talented Larry McKenna, an Australian affectionately nicknamed ‘McPinot,’ Escarpment sits in the renowned Te Muna region just a few kilometres from Martinborough. Larry McKenna honed his craft at prestigious Burgundy estates, including Dujac, Arlot, and Domaine de la Romanée-Conti before returning to New Zealand to build a vineyard dedicated to this star grape variety.
Through meticulous single vineyard vinifications, whole-cluster fermentations triggered by native yeasts, and extended ageing in oak casks, the estate produces some of the most distinctive and identifiable wines in the country. After Larry McKenna retired in 2022, winemaking duties passed to the capable hands of Tim Bourne and Rowan Hoskins. The pair expertly oversee several vineyard sites extending across Kupe, Te Rehua, Kiwa, and Pahi. Escarpment became the property of Australian estate Torbreck in 2018.
