Jean Macle

A standout Jura estate defined by precision and depth of character.

Founded in 1850, Domaine Jean Macle entered a new chapter in 2021 following the death of Jean Macle. Today, Laurent Macle leads the estate, recently joined by his wife and their daughter Carmen. Jean Macle himself was widely regarded as a pioneer of Jura wines, admired for his ability to master their singular style and raise them to an exceptional level.
Today, Laurent, his wife Elyane and their daughter Carmen oversee an extended 12-hectare vineyard planted with Chardonnay and Savagnin across the Côtes du Jura and Château-Chalon appellations. The vines grow on steep slopes of blue and black marl, where the dramatic gradients make mechanisation impossible and demand considerable manual labour. The level of commitment is palpable in the wines.
In the vineyard, no insecticides or anti-rot treatments are used to respect the land. After fermentation, the wines are aged in oak casks, most not completely filled, so that a natural veil of yeast develops on the surface. The estate is currently undergoing conversion to organic farming. At Jean Macle, respect for tradition is paramount and inseparable from the pursuit of terroir expression. Each wine is crafted with patience and long ageing, allowing the character of the Jura to shine with clarity. Domaine Jean Macle stands among the most respected in the Jura region, particularly renowned for its Vin Jaune, noted for its perfect balance and remarkable drinkability. A benchmark of the Jura.
