Bordeaux: the fine wine market’s safe haven

Against an uncertain global economic backdrop, Bordeaux fine wines continue to stand out as a safe haven and the choice of a “prudent investor” on the auction market. The 2026 iDealwine Barometer, an annual bible for those buying and selling on the secondary market, confirms this emphatically; in 2025, one in three bottles sold at auction on iDealwine (34%) came from Bordeaux’ vineyards.

Some figures that speak for themselves

  • 105,274 bottles (when scaled to 750ml) were auctioned in 2025, an increase of 23% in volume
  • More than €12.5 million of sales in Bordeaux wine, a 19% increase compared to 2024
  • An average bottle price of €119, stable and attractive
  • 42% of the volume are wines over 20 years old – mature vintages go under the hammer for €135 on average

Bordeaux remains region which is bought the most at iDealwine auction by far. This position confirms the confidence that wine enthusiasts worldwide have in the longevity and value of these wines.

The region's fine red wines – made from emblematic blends of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot – dominate sales, representing 92% of the volume and 93% of the value of Bordeaux wines that went under the hammer.

Mature vintages, stars of the auction world

Bordeaux’s reputation rests on its ability to stand the test of time. Bottles from the “vintages of the century”, 1945, 1961, 1982, 1989, 2000, 2005, 2009, 2010, generate particular excitement at auction, with bidding premiums reaching as much as +634% above the reserve price.

If you own mature vintages from leading Bordeaux châteaux, their resale value may prove considerably higher than their purchase price. Feel free to request a free estimate to find out if you have one of these treasures in your collection.

Second wines, a fast-growing segment

Often overlooked, Bordeaux second wines are nonetheless a segment gaining in popularity: 4,863 bottles sold at auction in 2025, up 29%, with an average price of €75. The finest second wines from leading estates achieve remarkable prices, for example:

  • 1989 Clarence de Haut-Brion: €300

  • 1982 Les Forts de Latour: €275

The sweet wines of Sauternes: treasures for cellaring

Although they account for just 6% of auction volume, Bordeaux’ fine sweet wines command extraordinary value and make up one of the market’s most fascinating segments. Château d'Yquem alone accounts for 56% of the value of sweet wines sold at auction on iDealwine, with an average price of €381 per bottle. In 2025, a 1945 Château d'Yquem reached €4,257!
