    About the wine

Sprawling over the slopes of the Dordogne Valley, Sant-Emilion is a small medieval town protected with UNESCO world heritage status. Vineyards here are highly renowned, covering nine communes and a number of different terroirs. The limestone plateau and clay-limestone slopes confer wines with a brilliant colour, full body and great structure. Towards Pomerol, gravel produces more refined wines. Vine populations are traditional of Bordeaux, presenting a strong Merlot bias. Only the best wines are accredited the grand cru classification; most of these are situated on the edge of the limestone plateau and clay-limestone slopes. Just two châteaux have permanently retained their “A” grand cru classification: Ausone and Cheval Blanc. Saint-Émilion wines are elegant and structured, lingering in the mouth with lots of finesse. When young they have a ruby robe with garnet-coloured hues. The bouquet is complex, varying according to the intensity of the maturation; elegant red-fruit notes mingle with hints of plum and toast; the rich aromatic profile also transfers to the palate. With time, tannins refine and develop these aromas. Soft and fleshy in texture, their perfect balance makes them eminently drinkable when young. The wine produced at Château l'Hermitage is in fact the tête de cuvée from Château Matras, owned by the Gaboriaud-Bernard family. Wines come from vines whose average age is 45 years, planted in propitious proximity to Angélus and Beauséjour Duffau. These cuvées receive all the care and attention of Bordeaux’s so-called “garage wines”, including cold maceration before maturing in new oak barrels for between 18 and 20 months. Powerful and silken in the mouth, they can be drunk when young but also have great ageing potential.
