About the producer

In the southern Rhône Valley, Domaine Charvin takes its name from its founder, Guillaume Charavin?–?though due to an administrative error, the second “a” was dropped. The estate's 32 hectares are managed by the 6th generation of the family and produces wines in the Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Côtes-du-Rhône appellations. Syrah and Grenache account for 90% of the vineyard, the rest being planted to Vaccaèse and Mourvèdre. The average age of vines is 45 (Châteauneuf-du-Pape) and 35 (Côtes-du-Rhône).Vineyard work follows organic principles with a focus on soil management and “gobelet” method pruning. The grapes are harvested by hand and yields are limited to 30hl/ha for the Châteauneuf-du-Pape and 50hl/ha for the Côtes du Rhône. Vinifications are also traditional with no destemming or filtration. Ageing is carried out in stainless steel vats for up to 21 months. The estate produces, on average, 100,000 bottles a year. Standout cuvées include a red Châteauneuf-du-Pape, a vibrant red Côtes-du-Rhône, and an elegant white, each a pure, finely judged expression of the southern Rhône’s terroirs.

About the wine

Guillaume Charavin founded the Charvin family estate in 1851. While phylloxera decimated the vineyard at the end of the 19th century, his son and grandson were able to restore it. Today, backed by age-old expertise, the estate proudly produces an outstanding Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The wine is a blend of four of the thirteen grape varieties authorised by the specifications for this ancient appellation. These include Grenache, which accounts for around 80% of the blend, Syrah, Mourvèdre and Vaccarèse, sourced from vines that are an average of 40 years old. Harvesting by hand is an integral part of the estate’s approach, and vinification is conducted in concrete vats, inert containers which preserve the identity of the grapes and the terroir. Lastly, the wine is aged in casks for around twenty months. Upon tasting, the wine reveals a vibrant purple colour with purplish tints. The fragrant bouquet of ripe black fruit and spices together with the harmonious palate and persistent finish produce a wine of exceptional elegance.
