About the producer

A wine producer for over 150 years, the Mascarello family bought its first vines in Monprivato, one of the top Barolo terroirs, in 1904. In 1919, Maurizio Mascarello acquired an old ice cellar from the 18th century which he transformed into a cellar, offering the ideal conditions for maturing and conserving wines. Each generation leaves its own mark on the Guiseppe Mascarello winery. Today, Mauro Mascarello with help of his wife and son tends to the 15 hectares, separated out into several plots. Producing blends until the 1960s, Mauro Mascarello then decided to favour plot-by-plot vinification and specifying the name of the village and parcel on the label, thus shining a light on the different ways to present the terroirs. The domain offers twelve bottles of wines, one of which is Monprivato, an historic plot that they nearly solely own.

About the wine

A single-varietal Nebbiolo from the Mascarello estate, founded in 1881, born of a vineyard located in the village of Castiglione Falletto. Manual harvests are carried out in mid-October, with bunches thinned during the summer months to ensure optimal ripeness. Fermentation follows a traditional approach, lasting around twenty to twenty-five days. The wine is then aged for thirty months in medium-sized Slavonian oak casks. Bottling takes place six years after the vintage. In the glass, the wine reveals a beautiful garnet hue with orange glints. The refined and complex nose combines fruit, spice, and floral notes. The body delivers notable strength. Intense and broad, the palate carries through with excellent length. Patience will be rewarded by an impressive ageing potential of around fifteen to twenty-five years. Serve at 16–18°C alongside characterful dishes such as hare stew braised in red wine or beef bourguignon. A pure marvel!
