Information
Although considered a ‘young’ estate, Poggio di Sotto was founded in the late 1980s. In 1989, more precisely. Wine lovers exploring this part of Tuscany will discover the estate on the south-eastern slopes of the hill of Montalcino. Poggio di Sotto quickly established an outstanding reputation thanks to its exceptional Sangiovese, the region’s noble grape variety. The vines benefit not only from an exceptional climate but are also farmed organically, flourishing on hillside vineyards between 200 and 400 metres above sea level. The estate has also earned acclaim for its meticulous winemaking and, above all, its remarkably long ageing regime. The wines are aged in large 30-hectolitre foudres (large wooden tuns), the restrained oak influence of which preserves the integrity of the wine. Rosso di Montalcino spends 24 months in oak, while Brunello di Montalcino is aged for 48 months and Brunello di Montalcino Riserva for 60 months. As you might expect, these are wines that reward patience and reveal their full potential after many years of ageing.
Poggio di Sotto is an Italian wine maker with a great international reputation, especially recognised for its Brunello di Montalcino which won a BIWA (Best Italian Wine Award) in 2013. Located in southern Tuscany, the climate is hot, though refreshed by the sea breeze from the south-west. This makes the wine more intense and generous than those found in Chianti. In this DOCG, only Sangiovese is grown to produce single-varietal cuvées to be aged for at least five years, including at least two in oak casks. In the glass this wine has a ruby red colour, from which escapes a surprising bouquet of floral notes. It will become more complex after ageing with hints of herb, balsamic, and rose petal. Careful, though, as this one is made in limited quantities!
